Heartband
DAVID GARNEAU + GARNET WILLIS
Exhibted at ISEA2020: 26th International Symposium on Electronic Art, Montréal, QC
Description
Heart Band is an interactive sound installation in which the sounds of twelve painted hand drums are activated by the motion of visitors. Each drum plays back recordings of David Garneau’s heart beat, its intensity and volume increasing and decreasing in relation to the visitor’s proximity to the drum. The visitors’ movements around the drums creates a unique composition which is heard as the phasing polyrythms of Garneau’s heartbeat emanating from the painted surfaces themselves. Ideally, the drums will be thought of as a spatially triggered ensemble of instruments played by their visitors in a gallery setting or by dancers in the context of a concert performance.
